Excess groundwater must be carefully controlled both during and after construction in order to ensure structural stability. Typical drainage systems include carriageway edge drains to protect the roadway, back of wall drainage to reduce hydrostatic pressure on the rear face of wall, or possibly a drainage mattress to provide the rapid escape of surplus water from the base of an artificial sports surface.
